Prep baseball: Viewmont wins in 5A tourney; Bountiful, Weber, Northridge out

KEARNS — Viewmont baseball trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, then scored three runs to beat Brighton 3-1 in the 5A state playoffs one-loss bracket Saturday at Kearns High School.

Hunter Tueller pitched a complete game for the Vikings, giving up three hits and striking out 10. Joshua Erickson batted 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Braden Campbell and Noah Montoya each hit 2 for 4. Lucas Bushey had a double, an RBI and one run scored. Catcher Thompson drove in the other Viewmont run.

Viewmont will face Wasatch in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Kearns High School.


KEARNS — Bountiful’s season ended with a loss to Wasatch in the one-loss bracket of the 5A tournament Saturday at Kearns High School.

Bountiful was buried early on a nine-run second inning from the Wasps. Wasatch starter Jake Post threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs and seven hits.

Bountiful scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings, and added two in a last-gasp seventh.

Bridger Freestone tallied two hits, including a triple, to lead Bountiful at the plate. Luke Stout, Josh Welling and Isaac Parry each drove in one run.


OREM — Copper Hills took a 5-0 lead after two innings to beat Northridge in the 6A one-loss bracket at Utah Valley University and end the Knights’ season.

Copper Hills scored its eight runs on three hits and 11 walks.

Ryker Kap and Paul Fomby led Northridge with two hits apiece. Kap and Dakari Armendariz each doubled, and Armendariz drove in two runs.

Jake Porter took the loss for the Knights. Kap and Drew West held Copper Hills hitless in the final three innings but issued a combined eight walks.


OREM — Weber saw its season end in a shutout loss to Riverton in the 6A one-loss bracket at Utah Valley University.

Kaden Gogg had the only two hits for the Warriors on the day, including a double. Riverton collected eight hits. Brevin Thon took the loss. Weber ends the season at 15-13.
